This year we are taking a different approach to skill development in sports that moves away from competition and toward building skills, allowing players to learn and enjoy the game without the pressure to win. The program will be designed for our youngest players, in the 8 to 10 year old age range for basketball. The program format remains consistent with past years with a combination of practice time and game play. During their practice time players in both divisions will be divided into smaller groups and rotate through activity [...]
Yes! The program format is made up of two different components: a midweek practice and a game on Saturday.
Game time will take place at in the gymnasium of the E.J. Freeland YMCA in Fort Erie on Saturdays. Scores will be kept during the game but will not be recorded and no standings will be kept. The Youth Sports Developmental Program is about playing the game for fun and putting new skills into practice.
Parents will know, in advance, what time the game is and teams will be decided by a random selection. Once they have been established, a 40 minute game will take place giving the players a chance to show off the skills they have learned.
Game times will be communicated to the parents prior to the program start. Each player will be assigned a game time that will remain consistent from week to week, for example every Saturday at 10:00 am. Game times will typically take place on Saturday mornings between 9:00 am and 11:00 am.
The program aims to focus on playing for the enjoyment of the game but that doesn’t mean there isn’t going to be competition among the players. We still want the players to have that game experience and keeping score is part of that experience. We won’t be saving those scores anywhere or keeping track of [...]
The current cost of the program is $82 for current YMCA members and $117 for community participants. Please refer to the program registration form or contact the Fort Erie YMCA for up to date pricing information.
