Supporting Newcomer Youth in Niagara

Moving to a new country can be overwhelming for young people.
The YMCA of Niagara Wellness Navigator Team is here to help.

What is a Wellness Navigator?

Wellness Navigators are trained professionals who support newcomer youth to settle in to their new communities with a focus on mental health and overall well-being.

They work directly with students and families to:

  • Connect them to culturally informed mental health resources
  • Provide one-on-one support during challenging moments
  • Offer a safe, welcoming space to talk and be heard
  • Help navigate unfamiliar systems and services

Every interaction is grounded in care, respect, and understanding of each family’s unique experience.

Why It Matters

Adjusting to a new school, language, and culture can impact confidence and well-being.

Some students feel isolated or unsure where to turn.

“Some newcomer students didn’t want to come to school because they felt nobody understood them.”

With the right support, students begin to feel more confident, connected, and ready to succeed.
