The Best Part of Showing Up
On Friday mornings at the Niagara Centre YMCA in Welland, the coffee is flowing, the conversations are lively, and a group of friends known as The Breakfast Club is catching up after another workout.
For some, the friendships began at the Y. Others arrived knowing a familiar face. But over time, their regular workouts have turned into something much bigger: a community that keeps them connected, active, and coming back for more.
A Little Exercise, A Lot of Friendship
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the group makes time for their workouts, with Fridays often including coffee and treats. Occasionally, someone organizes a breakfast outing, giving everyone another opportunity to get together outside the Y.
Their conversations cover just about everything, and while they don’t always agree, they never let a difference of opinion get in the way of a friendship.
Having friends at the Y also gives them a little extra motivation to stay active. It’s easier to stick to a routine when there are familiar faces looking forward to seeing you.
And when someone doesn’t show up, their friends notice.

Looking Out for One Another
Over time, these friendships have grown into something even more meaningful: a community that looks out for each other.
When one member of the group, Tony, stopped showing up for his regular workouts, his friends noticed. Concerned about his absence, they checked in and eventually learned he was in the hospital. Knowing that people were thinking about him meant a great deal.
On another occasion, the group learned that Steve, a fellow member who often keeps to himself while exercising, had a birthday coming up.
They organized a card, gathered signatures, and surprised him by singing Happy Birthday around the treadmill.
It was a simple gesture, but one that made Steve feel seen and appreciated.
These small acts of kindness are what make the group special. Whether it’s helping a friend, checking in when someone is away, or simply sharing a cup of coffee, they’ve created a place where people know they belong.
A Place for Everyone
One of the things the group appreciates most about the YMCA is the variety of people who walk through its doors.
They enjoy seeing other older adults staying active alongside young people, families, and members from different walks of life. To them, that mix is part of what makes the Y feel like a community.
And while there are plenty of places to exercise, the group agrees that there’s something different about the YMCA.
The Y’s health, fitness, and recreation centres are a place where conversations happen between sets, friendships form across generations, and a familiar face can turn an ordinary workout into the highlight of someone’s day.
For these friends, the Y has become much more than a place to stay physically active. It’s a place to connect, care for one another, and find a little extra motivation to keep showing up.
Because sometimes, the best part of a workout is the people waiting to see you.
