When Khalya began planning for summer, she was looking for more than a place to keep her son busy while she worked.
As a devoted mom and a professional with a full workday ahead of her, she wanted a camp where six-year-old Pryce would feel safe, included, and excited to take on each morning — a place she could drop him off knowing he’d be supported, engaged, and happy.
Finding that peace of mind mattered. Camp had always seemed like it might be a challenge for Pryce — new people, new routines, and so much activity. But from the very first morning, she saw something different. Counsellors greeted him by name, helped him settle in, and met his cautious curiosity with patience and kindness.
By the end of the week, the drop-offs that once came with a little hesitation turned into cheerful waves and wide smiles.
Pryce found his rhythm — joining in games, making new friends, and sharing stories about his day before they’d even left the parking lot.
When asked if he’d ever want to be a camp counsellor when he grows up, Pryce’s answer came easily: “Yes.”
For the camp staff, the experience was just as meaningful.
“Pryce reminded us why we do what we do,” shared Abby, a camp supervisor. “Every small moment — a high five, a shared laugh, a new skill learned — it all builds trust. Seeing him open up to us and to the other campers was incredible.”
That sense of connection stayed with the team. They still talk about Pryce’s kindness, his curiosity, and the way his confidence grew each day. As one counsellor put it, “We watched him shine — and that made us shine too.”
For Khalya, those simple joys meant everything — and offered something more. Camp gave her the confidence to focus on her work, knowing her son was not only cared for, but thriving. “He came home happy, tired, and proud of himself,” she said. “That’s all a parent could hope for.”
At YMCA Summer Day Camp, moments like these happen every day — where children find a sense of belonging, and parents find comfort knowing their kids are safe, supported, and having fun.

“I think Pryce has impacted my life so significantly. I went home and would talk about him and I love him so much. It was great to see the opportunity to provide a camp that is so diverse to work with so many individuals and see their uniqueness shine through.”

Abby
“Watching the two of them form a relationship with Pryce was so cool. End of the summer was a hard goodbye and it was nice to watch them as a supervisor to see them engaging with every kid and watching those relationships being made.”
