How One Instructor Sparked a New Wave of Wellness at Niagara West YMCA

Sometimes, traditional fitness classes don’t meet everyone’s needs. At the Niagara West YMCA, Tamara—a creative and caring instructor—recognized a gap and stepped in to fill it. What started as a one-on-one pool session has grown into a thriving small-group program that inspires members, builds confidence, and creates new connections.

It all began with Christine.

Living with arthritis, Christine found aquafit was the only form of exercise that didn’t cause pain. But she wanted more. The machines were too much, and land-based workouts were off the table. One day, she saw Tamara leading a one-on-one personal training session in the pool and felt a spark of hope.

“I knew immediately it was what I needed,” Christine recalls. She approached Tamara and soon began personalized sessions that gave her a full-body workout—customized to her abilities. “It was the best decision ever,” she says.

Word got out.

Other women noticed Christine’s progress and growing confidence. One by one, they joined in. A small group of women emerged, each with unique goals and limitations, working together in the water toward stronger, healthier lives.

Anna appreciates how every session is thoughtfully planned. “The classes are so well designed to meet various needs and fitness levels,” she says. “We get a full-body workout and leave feeling stronger—physically and mentally.”

Sandra was growing bored with her fitness routine. During a check-in appointment, she mentioned she was looking for something different. She was invited to try the morning pool class—and never looked back. “It became the best decision ever, and I love it!” she says. “I’ve made new friendships and found a group of women I truly enjoy spending time with.”

Janet says the small group sessions helped her find focus and energy. “I’ve gained strength, set personal goals, and built a positive attitude. Do something today that your future self will thank you for!”

“The early morning class gets my day started right—and being part of a small group makes it more social and enjoyable.”

Mina values the sense of community and encouragement. “Having an instructor who holds you accountable in a way that’s supportive and accessible makes all the difference,” she says. “The early morning class gets my day started right—and being part of a small group makes it more social and enjoyable.”

And for Tamara, the joy is mutual.

She loves leading this group and designing workouts that help each member reach their full potential. “I believe every member deserves access to what works for them,” she says. “Seeing someone hit a goal or overcome a challenge they once thought impossible—that’s the greatest reward. We truly are stronger together.”
