A New Beginning in Niagara

When Sai and her husband, Karthic, left India to pursue their Master’s degrees in the United States, they dreamed of building a bright future together. But as the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the world, they felt called to Canada — drawn by its strong pandemic response and reputation for welcoming newcomers.

Arriving in the Niagara Region was exciting but challenging. Even with postgraduate degrees, strong English skills, and work experience, they faced pandemic-era hurdles: closed offices, housing difficulties, and the uncertainty of starting over in a new country.

Finding Connection and Support

Determined to move forward, Sai reached out to the YMCA of Niagara’s Employment & Immigrant Services. There, she was welcomed by Angela, an employment coach, and Iris, a career mapping coach — two passionate team members dedicated to helping newcomers thrive.

Together, they fine-tuned resumes, shared job market insights, and sent personalized job leads.

Hard Work Pays Off

With only one computer between them, Sai and Karthic carefully juggled Zoom appointments, job searches, and interviews. Within three months, their teamwork — paired with YMCA support — led to success: Sai secured a role in Environmental & Civic Engineering, and Karthic stepped into a position in Business Administration.

But the relationship didn’t stop at employment. Iris continued to check in, offering ongoing encouragement and ensuring they felt confident and connected in their new home.
