A newcomer to Canada in pursuit of a career in healthcare, Ravinder is a participant in YMCA Employment & Immigrant Services programs.
This is his immigrant experience.
Overcoming barriers
Ravinder is an internationally educated healthcare professional. He hails from India and holds a master’s degree in Public Health. As a newcomer to Canada, he found it difficult to find the right path back into medicine or health care. His area of specialization (medical) seemed to be a barrier.
Following a referral to the YMCA of Niagara, Ravinder met Employment Counsellor, Kim, who further connected him to our career mapping coach Iris.
Kim helped Ravinder find interim work while he continued to work with his career mapping coach to better define his medical career path in Canada. His coach helped him explore his career goals and assess his barriers.
As a team, they researched many different paths and ideas, including the possibility of going back to medical school. After completing a few online bridging/upgrading classes, and with some job search and preparation from his coaches, Ravinder successfully completed the interview process for a position as Infection, Prevention and Control (IPC) Coordinator with a large healthcare service and long-term care provider in Northern Ontario.
In his own words, “Thank you Iris and Kim. I appreciate you always for your support as I searched for the right career path in Canada. If I ever need additional guidance in the future, I will always connect with you. Thank you for everything you do for new immigrants in Canada.”
