Bridging Research and Community: The YMCA-Brock Collaboration on Physical Literacy
At the YMCA of Niagara, we believe in creating opportunities for every child to grow, learn and thrive through movement and play. Our recent collaboration with the Brock University Centre for Healthy Youth Development through Sport is a testament to this mission, demonstrating how partnerships can drive meaningful change in our community.
This multi-year initiative has closely examined the YMCA’s KidFit programs, including KidFit Fun, KidFit Cardio, KidFit Game On, and KidFit Yoga. These programs are designed to foster physical literacy—a cornerstone for lifelong health and well-being—by developing fundamental movement skills like hopping, throwing, and balancing. Together with researchers from the Brock University Centre for Healthy Youth Development through Sport, we explored how structured, play-based activities can empower children to embrace active lifestyles.
The Research Behind the Impact
Researchers from the Brock University Centre for Healthy Youth Development through Sport gathered data from April 2023 to August 2024 using the PLAYBasic assessment tool, a validated measure of physical literacy. The remarkable results showed significant improvements in participants’ confidence, physical competence, and injury prevention. These findings highlight the value of KidFit and the role of innovative assessment tools in shaping impactful programming.
Dr. Nicole Chimera and Dr. Nathan Hall from Brock’s Kinesiology Department co-presented the study’s findings at the town hall event at the Niagara Centre YMCA in November 2024. This research emphasized how this partnership bridges academic research and community programming, showcasing the transformative impact of evidence-based approaches on child development and health.

Shaping the Future Through Child and Youth Programs
At the YMCA, the collaboration has strengthened our commitment to delivering high-quality child and youth programs. Beyond KidFit programs, we offer a range of programming, from drop-in to registered skill-based classes like basketball, soccer, ball hockey, etc., as well as specialty programs like Taekwondo, Karate, and Kidsz Who Can Code. Each program is thoughtfully designed to help children develop fundamental movement skills while fostering creativity, social connections, and self-confidence.
Our flexible drop-in programs encourage kids to explore physical activity through guided play and structured activities. With stations set up for games, obstacle courses, and skill-building exercises, children can engage in movement that feels like fun rather than exercise.
The registered programs include focused classes like soccer and basketball skills, prioritizing fundamental movement skills and physical literacy development. These programs are tailored to various age groups and skill levels, ensuring inclusive participation for all children.
From martial arts to coding, our specialty programs provide unique opportunities for children to explore their interests or develop new skills. Whether mastering taekwondo form or creating a digital project, participants build confidence in their abilities on and off the mat or computer screen.
A Shared Vision for Health and Well-Being
As we look ahead, the YMCA of Niagara remains committed to advancing physical literacy and inspiring children and youth to lead active, fulfilling lives. With the support of community partners like the Brock University Centre for Healthy Youth Development through Sport and funding from organizations such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, we are proud to pave the way for healthier futures in Niagara.
