Building confidence, one opportunity at a time
When Ashlee first connected with YMCA Employment Services, she was still in high school and ready to enter the workforce. There was just one challenge: without much previous work experience, getting that first opportunity was proving difficult.
“I struggled to hear back from employers, my resume wasn’t strong, and I lacked confidence.”
Building the tools to succeed
With support from the YMCA, Ashlee began strengthening her resume and applications and preparing for interviews. Having someone in her corner helped make the job search feel a little less intimidating.
“The YMCA helped me build a professional resume, improve my applications, and prepare for interviews so I felt less nervous.”
Ashlee also connected with job fairs and successfully completed the YMCA’s Power of Possible program, building a network of people who continue to support her today.
But finding employment isn’t only about having a strong resume. Practical barriers can make it difficult to search for work, attend interviews, or reliably get to a new job. YMCA Employment Services helped Ashlee pay for some essentials so she could stay connected with future employers.
From opportunity to opportunity
With each new experience, Ashlee continued to build her skills and confidence.
Her journey has taken her through opportunities with working in retail and tourism and, today, to full-time employment as a Guest Service Agent.
“I’ve grown a lot and feel much more confident in myself.”
For Ashlee, finding work was also about finding her place in the community and beginning to build something for herself. In her current role, she appreciates having a supportive team around her as she continues to learn and grow.
