Member Etiquette Statement
The YMCA is a shared experience for everyone to enjoy. Each of us can make it better for all by being considerate of others. YMCA members, volunteers and staff all accept the responsibility to treat one another with Caring, Honesty and Respect. We ask that members respect all posted guidelines in specific program areas. Please feel free to speak with a YMCA staff if there are any questions.
Supervision of Children
Children’s health and safety is important to us. Children up to 9 years of age must be supervised by an adult or guardian (minimum of 16 years of age) unless they are participating in a YMCA program.
We encourage members to take steps to protect their valuables. Lockers are for day use only. Please bring your own lock. The YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Members are asked not to bring valuables to the YMCA. The YMCA provides safety/wallet lockers for members to store their personal items.
*Do not use the camera function on personal devices in change rooms. Taking photographs, images, video or recordings is prohibited.
Family/Special Needs Change Rooms
This change room is for parents with opposite sex children over the age of 1 and for members that require additional or private space die to special circumstances. Adults must wear swimsuits in the showers and clothing or a swimsuit must be worn outside the change cubicles. We ask that members co-operate in making the change room experience comfortable for everyone.
General Change Room
Each facility has a change room for males and females that includes day lockers, washroom, swimsuit dryers and washrooms. This change room is for all ages.
Adult Only (Plus) Change Rooms
These change rooms are for adults 18+ an have additional amenities such as towel service, steam room, lounge area and toiletries.
The YMCA is committed to diversity, social inclusion and to meeting its obligations under Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. (AODA), by providing accessible environments that respect the rights of every individual. YMCA members are encouraged to bring forward concerns or compliments, and to make suggestions on ways to improve programs and services and their YMCA experience.
Members 10 to 15 years of age are required to attend a Youth Fitness Centre Orientation that will provide them with necessary safety and etiquette information before they are permitted to use the Fitness Centre or attend a Group Fitness Class. Tweens 10 to 12 are required to have their parent or guardian who is also a YMCA member that will be attending the YMCA regularly with them also attend the orientation.
Track Etiquette and Safety
Adults, students and youth aged 13-15 who have completed a Youth Fitness Centre Orientation have track privileges. On specific days/times child members aged 6+ years may use the track when supervised within arm’s reach of a parent/guardian who is also a member. Check the specific times at each branch.
There are lanes to suit your needs: walking, running and passing. (The Niagara Centre YMCA does not have a running lane due to the configuration of the track around the gym.) The outside lane has been designated as the walking lane as it includes a hand guide rail. Please use the lanes as designated above the track. The running/walking direction on the track changes every day, so check the direction arrow before stepping onto the track.
On Hold Policy
If you know you will be absent for less than six months, we are able to put your membership ‘on hold’. To put a membership on hold, please visit your YMCA to complete the appropriate documentation or complete and submit https://webserver.ymcaofniagara.ca/membershiphold/.
YMCA Smoke Free
At the YMCA, we promote health and wellness. Smoking is not permitted in any facility or within 9 metres of any YMCA entrance.
Your Membership Card
Membership cards must be presented each time your enter the YMCA and scanned at the Membership Desk. You are the only one who can use your YMCA membership card and cards are non-transferable. Valid photo ID is required if your membership card is not presented at a visit.
To ensure the safety of all our participants, when purchasing a membership or accessing the YMCA for the day, photo identification is required. Photos will be taken and remain confidentially in the membership system.
Clothing and Footwear
To ensure comfort and safety, closed toe, athletic shoes must be worn at all times. Street shoes are not permitted in the shower or pool area. The YMCA also requires members to wear ‘family-friendly’ attire; a t-shirt and tights, shorts or sweat pants.
Mobile Device Camera/Video Cameras
To support member privacy, the use of mobile device cameras and video cameras is not allowed in the facility without prior written consent from the Centre Manager.
Any photography taken on site must have prior approval by YMCA Management and adhere to YMCA photo release policies.
