Certifications

The YMCA is dedicated to offering high quality enrichment courses to help individuals develop in spirit, mind and body. The exam date (where applicable) is the last day of the course. Prerequisites are to be presented on the first day of the course. Participants must be of age by the last day of the course. Non-members are welcome unless otherwise stated.

Cancellations must be made in person a minimum of 4 business days before the start of the course to receive a full refund. Cancellations made less than 4 business day before the start of the course will be refunded less an administration fee of 35% of the full course fee. Cancellations will not be refunded after the course begins unless a medical note is provided. All enrichment course refunds will be mailed within 14 business days of submission.

The YMCA of Niagara offers a comprehensive selection of Advanced Aquatics programs including Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Instructors and NLS. We also offer Standard First Aid courses and recertification. Listed below are the Prerequisites and Fees for each program. Pre-requisites and fees are listed below.

Aquatic Leader Corps (Members only)

Prerequisite: Completion of Star 7 or equivalent
Course Fee: $0


Lifesaving Fitness Bronze, Silver, Gold
(Members only)

Prerequisite: 10 years of age and completion of Star 6 or equivalent
Course Fee: $0


Bronze Star & Basic First Aid/CPR(A)

Prerequisite: recommended completion of Star 6 or equivalent
Course Fee: Members - $69.53 + HST
                     Non-Members - $77.25 + HST


Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid/CPR(B)

Prerequisite: 13 years of age (birth certificate required) or Bronze Star certification
Course Fee: Members - $137.70 + HST
                     Non-Members - $153.00 + HST

Bronze Cross

Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid/CPR(B) Certificate
Course Fee: Members - $85.50 + HST

YMCA Swim Instructors & LSS Lifesaving Instructors

Prerequisite: 16+ years and Bronze Cross
Course Fee: Members - $135.00 + HST
                     Non-Members - $150.00 + HST
Notes: 100% attendance and participation required.

National Lifeguard - NL

(Following the 2012 updated National Lifeguard standards)

Prerequisite: 16 years of age (birth certificate required), Bronze Cross and current Standard First Aid/CPR(C) – Standard First Aid must be from organizations recognized in Ontario public pool regulations. (Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance)
Course Fee: Members - $256.50 + HST
                     Non-Members - $285.00 + HST
Notes: 100% attendance and participation required


NL Recert
(Following the 2012 updated National Lifeguard standards)

Course Fee: Members - $76.50 + HST
                     Non-Members - $85.00 + HST
Notes: Must bring proof of certification to recert.

 


First Aid

Standard First Aid + CPR(C)

Course Fee: Members - $90.90 + HST
                     Non-Members - $101.00 + HST
Notes: 100% attendance and participation required. Certification issued through Lifesaving Society.


Standard First Aid + CPR(C) Recert

Course Fee: Members - $67.50 + HST
                     Non-Members - $75. 00 + HST
Notes: Must bring proof of certification to recert. You must hold certification from the Lifesaving Society (blue card) dated no more than 3 years from date of issue to attend this recertification. You may only recertify once, then subsequently you must repeat the full course. Thereafter, you may renew by alternating recertification and full course.

 


Home Alone
This course provides young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate what to do in case of an emergency
- How and when to call 911 
- Demonstrate through role play how to call 911 
- Demonstrate basic first aid skills
Participants must be 10 years of age or older.
This is a 2 hour course, 100% attendance is required.
Registration is available at all YMCA of Niagara Health, Fitness and Aquatics Centres and online.
Registration will close 48 hours prior.  A minimum number of participants must be met in order for the program to run.
Program fee is $25 for current YMCA of Niagara members and $35 for non-members.

Red Cross Babysitting
This course provides young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to be help them learn child care, injury prevention and basic first aid skills.
At the end of this course, participants will understand:
-  Business of babysitting
-  Caring for babies
-  Caring for toddlers
-  Caring for preschoolers
-  Caring for school-aged children
-  Creating safe environments
-  How to handle emergencies and first aid
Participants must be 11 years of age or older.
This is a 8 hour course, with a lunch break.  100% attendance is required.
Registration is available at all YMCA of Niagara Health, Fitness and Aquatics Centres and online.
Registration will close 48 hours prior.  A minimum number of participants must be met in order for the program to run.
Program fee is $50 for current YMCA of Niagara members and $65 for non-members.
